Second, ironmaster invited peddler mistaking him as his old army friend but, she invited him seeing his living condition which shows that she id compassionate and feels others pain. Third, Ironmaster also lacks convincing power as he was unable to make peddler come to his house, whereas his daughter convinced peddler at once.

There are several such surprising instances in story. First, When peddler knocked the doors for shelter to crofter it was expected that like others he will also close the door on the face of peddler but, surprisingly he happily invited peddler. Second, When next morning he both crofter and peddler left crofter's house at same time, it was unexpected that peddler would come back to the window and steal crofter's 30 kroners in exchange of his hospitality. Third, when peddler found Ramso iron factory where hw took shelter, where ironmaster invited him mistaking him Captain Von Stale and he denied but, getting convinced by Edla to celebrate Christmas at their house knowing that he is going to the den of a lion, was quite surprising. Fourth, Edla arguing with them, knowing that they have incited someone unknown mistaking ironmaster's old army friend. Fifth, At the end of chapter character change of peddler and returning his stolen thirty Kroner and the letter and gift by him was quite unusual and surprising.

What made the peddler finally change his ways?

There are several things that made peddler change his way of living and thought about world. First, after stealing 30 kroners form crofter when he choose the forest route and got lost he realised that he himself got attracted to the bait and got caught by the rattrap of this world. Later due to selfless hospitality and compassion of ironmaster's daughter Edla. His conscience made him change to pay her back by giving respect to her hospitality and to maintain her faith on this world, with a sense of gratitude.

How dose the metaphor of the rattrap serve to highlight the human predicament?

People are often tend to use wrong ways to quickly to achieve riches, luxuries and comfort in life and get trapped in the rattrap of this world and end up being in difficult situations, ultimately when people get themselves trapped they have to go through difficult situations. Hence the metaphor of the rattrap highlights human predicament.

The peddler comes out as a person with a subtle sense of humour. How does this serve in lightening the seriousness of teh theme of the story and also endear him to us?

First, His conversation with Ironmaster where he talks about realization of his mistake and also warned ironmaster that one day he will also get trapped in the rattrap of this world. It was quite funny to balance the seriousness of the theme. Second, It was funny that at the end leaving ironmaster's house he left a rattrap as gift for the daughter of a person who own an entire ironmaster industry.

The reader's sympathy is with the peddler right form the defining of the story. Why is this so? Is the sympathy justified?

Ans.

The paddler had reader's sympathy from the very beginning of the story as his life was monotonous and full of difficulties, due to lack of profitability in fis business of selling rattraps he had ro rely on begging or petty theft to survive, he had to beg even for basic things like shelter and also was also lonely. This sympathy is justified as at the end we came to know that peddler was a good person just because of people's unkind behavior towards him made him to choose and think in a wrong way. But when he was treated kindly he returns it back in the best way he can.

The story also focuses on human loneliness and the need to bound with others.

As we all are social being, er need bond with others. This story tells us about consequences of loneliness and need of bonds. As the consequences of loneliness crofter allowed peddler to stay with him and accompany him and in excitement he told peddler, where he keep his money and got robbed. Due to loneliness peddler started thinking ill of world as no one treated kindly, before he met Edla. Ironmaster and his daughter also suffering from loneliness as a result they let an unknown to celebrate christmas with them, and also changed the peddler's mindset.

The story is both entertaining and philosophical. Reactions, humor of peddler and the way in which characters are portrayed mede it further entertaining. He knows what ironmaster is going to do, the way in which peddler started warning ironmaster to cover himself up when his identity was disclosed and the way crofter was trying to convince peddler that he earned 30 kroners like he was convincing himself. On the other had this story also provides insight to current reality of world where people are unkind selfish and lacks compassion; and people are lonely even after surrounding by people.
